Canon has made some solid printers for a long time. They were always more reliable compared to Epson or HP printers. They also did not have any Nazi Circuits blocking the end user from using compatible carts or refilling the Canon OEM carts. This all changed though when they released new models which came with the cli-8 and pgi-5 carts. These new carts had the dreaded nazi circuit, this added more complexity to the printer and of course more bugs.
The 2nd generation carts go even further because Canon decided to make them smaller with less ink. In the US of A the carts are called cli-220 and pgi-220, in europe cli-520 and pgi-520.
cli-8: 13ml
cli-220: 9ml
PGI-5: 26ml
PGI-221: 19ml
The new carts are showing up in models IP3600, IP4600, MP620, MP980.

The old carts where simple and effective, no buggy nazi circuit causing problems and refilling was a breeze. I would rather pay more money up front for a printer I can refill and much larger carts.
