A users emailed me saying this about the MP780:
I have been trying to get the printer set to do this for 6 months. After I
emailed you I was puttering around the service mode menu and found one
that said cd-r: manual - auto it was set to manual, so I changed it to
auto. The printer said please wait… It reset itelf and powered back up.
I repeated step 2b and it worked. I tried to find the part of the service
menu again so I could pass along the info to you, but now I can’t locate
the menu again. I will keep on looking. This is probably the big bug-a-boo
in the setup of MP780’s that no one could figure out. Once again thanks
for all your info.
The steps needed:
Only perform this step if 2b fails and flashes the alarm light without feeding the paper from the back tray.
Go into service mode MENU-SCAN-COPY-SCAN-OK
hit the left arrow once to TEST MODE- press OK
hit MENU again this puts you in FACTORY MODE
go to menu item [9]CD-R(MANUAL) hit OK wait a minute or longer don’t hurry it.
the display will say READY.
Hit the STOP/RESET button.
The printer will do a hard reset and power backup.
Now go back and repeat step 2b and it should work.
If not repeat alternate step 2b-a again until step 2b works.
I personally don’t own a MP780 so I hope this helps people who do and where having trouble getting cd printing to work.
More Info from another email user:
I have a Canon MP 780 and have gone nuts trying to get the CD printing to work for the last 3 hours. I followed all your instructions to the letter about a dozen times and then tried the MP 780 bug page as well regarding changing CD-R(Manual) to auto and nothing worked.
I have version 1.20 ROM and I tried your suggestion of New Zealand and some other European countries after the MP78o bug fix, but it would never work. Finally I tried leaving the Region to “standard” which is what you say not to do with Rom 1.20 and then doing MP 780 bug fix, I finally got the CD-R (auto) to stick and the EPROM page finally printed with a value of CDRS 170 indicating success.
Prior to doing it this way, I would only get the ALARM light to blink. So it would seem that not all Rom 1.20 version MP780 printers are the same. Just in case someone else has the same problem.
