Canon has made some solid printers for a long time. They were always more reliable compared to Epson or HP printers. They also did not have any Nazi Circuits blocking the end user from using compatible carts or refilling the Canon OEM carts. This all changed though when they released new models which came with the cli-8 and pgi-5 carts. These new carts had the dreaded nazi circuit, this added more complexity to the printer and of course more bugs.

The 2nd generation carts go even further because Canon decided to make them smaller with less ink. In the US of A the carts are called cli-220 and pgi-220, in europe cli-520 and pgi-520.

cli_8 vs cli_521.jpg

cli-8: 13ml
cli-220: 9ml

PGI-5: 26ml
PGI-221: 19ml

The new carts are showing up in models IP3600, IP4600, MP620, MP980.

TEST REPORT:

http://Druckerchannel.de did some testing and the yields are a lot less and the page cost has increased.

Clipboard Image.png

Weight & Noise:

Noise:
4600: 45.5 dB(A)
4500: 34.5 dB(A)

Weight
4600: 5.7kg
4500: 6.9Kg

The lower weight would suggest less noise dampening and thinner plastic. Since it’s 11db louder that would seem to be the case.

Classic:

The old carts where simple and effective, no buggy nazi circuit causing problems and refilling was a breeze. I would rather pay more money up front for a printer I can refill and much larger carts.

This is where everyone should begin:

  • Some newer models are showing up and they usually work the same as the older models *if* nothing has changed.
  • Please be aware that sometimes the steps don’t work the first time, repeating the steps usually fixes it.
  • If tray rejection continues please read the Tray Rejection General Guide and also Tray Rejection and Mac OSX.
  • The LCD screen is not used in the process except with the older MP700 series.
  • You will get no indication that the process has worked except for the printout, this is how to confirm success.
  • Canon CD trays are sold on eBay, search eBay for “Canon CD Tray”.
  • Make sure to have paper in both trays and that the paper selection is set to rear tray not the bottom bfore entering service mode.
  • If you get 6 blinks error and no print out it means the inner door is still down from steps one.
  • For an explanation of Service Mode vs. ROM print out please see “EEPROM & Service Mode Printout“.

I’ve been leary about posting this guide mainly because it is tedious and can be difficult for many less skill users to figure out. The automatic alignment usually gets pretty close to being perfect but that small white edge can be annoying. So if you have the time and patience to make the adjustments manually then here are the steps:

9 times EEPROM error [6800] .
11 times Carriage lift mechanism error [5110] .
12 times AP position error [6A00] .
13 times Paper feed position error [6B00] Sometimes it’s something simple like a hunk of paper stuck under the print head, another more radical trick is to turn the printer upside down and shake it. Be careful though you may spill ink or cause damage to the printer.
14 times Paper feed cam sensor error [6B10]0 .
15 times USB Host VBUS over current [9000] .
16 times Valve sensor error [6C00] .

20 times Other hardware error [6500] .

Continuous alternate blinking

ROM error .
Lights in orange RAM error .
. . .

Most of these are serious problems that need a Canon service person to fix but sometimes these
errors pop-up when something simple is happening like paper stuck under the printhead or a small piece
of tape on the printhead contacts.

1. Install the latest driver: http://software.canon-europe.com/ , it is either Printer or Multifunctionals drop down menu that should have your model listed. Canon has newer drivers that support 10.5; look carefully because there may older drivers listed as well. Reboot after install.

2. Install CD Label Print 1.60 and launch it then follow the pictures:

Page Setup

-

Create your design and click print.

Click Print again.

You may need to select composite document. Then click Save As PDF.

Open the PDF and you agian need to do a page setup.

You have done the Five Easy Steps and everything seems to have worked but it keeps kicking the tray back out and telling you that there is no cd-r or the inner door is open, these are some of the things that might be causing it:

  • CDRS=(000) should be something other then zero’s, if it’s zero’s then you should repeat the five steps. You can find CDRS numbers by enter service model as instructed for your model and then pressing the {resume} or {stop/reset} button twice and then the power button. (Sometimes it will be 000 and still work though)
  • Try an EPROM reset: http://damnprinter.com/?p=50 some models require this procedure.
  • Fully uninstall the driver using the actual uninstaller.exe, then reinstall.
  • After clicking print in cd label print wait until the screen tells you to insert the tray otherwise it will reject the tray because it’s not ready for it yet.
  • Sometimes unplugging the USB cable and then plugging it back in will fix the problem. This is more a Windows issue.
  • Sometimes the USB cable is bad, try another cable.
  • You have place a cd/dvd that already has printing on it, the sensors will detect this and eject the tray. This feature is found in the printer preferences under the maintenance tab, click custom settings then uncheck the box call “Detects a printable disc on the cd-r tray”. After trying this be sure to turn it back on because it’s intended as a safety feature.
  • CD Label Print and Mac OSX seem to have a real problem with tray rejection but there is a work around for it which can be found here: http://damnprinter.com/?p=181
