Service Call Errors (by LED Blinking in Orange and Green Alternately, or Lit in Orange)

LED alternate blinking
in orange and green

Error [Error code] .
2 times Carriage error [5100] .
3 times Paper feed error [6000] Make sure paper is in the tray and nothing is blocking it.

4 times

Purge unit error [5C00]

.

5 times

ASF (cam) sensor error [5700]

.

6 times

Internal temperature error [5400]

.
7 times Waste ink absorber full [5B00] You have printed a ton of borderless pictures and the overspray has filled the sponge.
8 times Print head temperature rise error [5200] .
9 times EEPROM error [6800] .
11 times Carriage lift mechanism error [5110] .
12 times AP position error [6A00] .
13 times Paper feed position error [6B00] Sometimes it’s something simple like a hunk of paper stuck under the print head, another more radical trick is to turn the printer upside down and shake it. Be careful though you may spill ink or cause damage to the printer.
14 times Paper feed cam sensor error [6B10]0 .
15 times USB Host VBUS over current [9000] .
16 times Valve sensor error [6C00] .
17 times Motor driver error [6D00] .
20 times Other hardware error [6500] .

Continuous alternate blinking

ROM error .
Lights in orange RAM error .
. . .

Most of these are serious problems that need a Canon service person to fix but sometimes these
errors pop-up when something simple is happening like paper stuck under the printhead or a small piece
of tape on the printhead contacts.

Many many thanks for the straightforward guidance on this excellent website. My brand new Canon MP970 printer started behaving very oddly and the manual was useless, not even mentioning what a error code 5100 was, thus maknig me fear the worst. I wanted to print today and canon staff aren’t available. Thanks to your advice, I managed to solve the horrendously technical feat of removing a small piece of plastic that had fallen into the rear paper tray! (Something I’d never have thought of) . Damn printer indeed - more accurately - damn poor on-line support!

(6a00) It can be caused by several things:

    1. Printhead is stuck to the docking area either because some old ink has become like glue.
    2. A piece of paper got over there and is jamming it.
    3. The spring is weak and is not pulling the docking area down.
    4. The Purge unit has failed and needs to be replaced.

Turn the printer off and then slide the printhead to the left and use a flashlight to see if you see any paper stuck around where the two sponges that where sitting below the prinhead or if it just didn’t lower like it should have.

    @Aleksandar:

    1. Enter Service Mode for your Model (Found under *The Five Easy Steps* [p=105])

    2. Press Resume 4 times

    3. Press Power to execute.

    4. Press Power twice to exit Service Mode.

*Note1: These Instructions are for the IP4200/IP4300 only, other models will differ.

*Note2: By overriding the Waste ink error you assume risk of ink leaking from the printer if it is turned upside down. DO NOT TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN.

    @CLIVE try this:

If the device is not functioning properly or to clear memory, reset it.

    1. On the operator panel, press and hold the ON/OFF button for one second. (The display will go blank.)

Note: It may be necessary to unplug the power cord if pressing the ON/OFF button does not shut off the printer.

    2. Wait approximately ten seconds and then press the ON/OFF button again.

    3. Wait until the device has completed its cycling process before submitting another job request.

    or try this:

To clear error messages displayed on the LCD or if the printer is not functioning as expected, it may be necessary to simultaneously press Stop/Reset and ON/OFF buttons.

    1. With the printer powered on, press and hold down the Stop/Reset button then press the ON/OFF button.

    2. Once the printer is powered off, hold down Stop/Reset and then press ON/OFF.

    or this:

Reseat the printhead (printhead may also need replacing)

The 6500 error can be something that needs repair or complete replacement as well. If your printer is less then 12 months then you can contact Canon Tech support for repair or replacement under warranty.

    For toll-free technical support*, please call 1 (800) 828-4040 during regular business hours (currently Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. EST, excluding holidays).

The list above are service call errors which usually means they are more serious and often times need to be fixed at a Canon Service Center.

    You can try and clear the error by holding down the power button and waiting for it to turn off then wait 30 seconds and turn it back on. {you might need to unplug it to get it to turn off}

    or

Hold down the stop/reset and then push the power button while the printer is on. The printer should shut off then wait 30 seconds and then hold the stop/reset again and push the power button and the printer should turn on with the error cleared.

    @IAN

Service call errors are more serious then operator errors and it might need to be seen by a Canon Service Center.

If you haven’t used the printer in a while the print head can get stuck to the two sponges that it sits on when it’s in the rest position to the right. Open the lid and make sure the print head is able to move around and also using a flashlight inspect the inside for anything that shouldn’t be there like a hunk of paper. There’s a lot of moving parts that can get jammed up.

It sounds like a bad cart or bad print head. Since your using a IP4500 I would guess that it’s still under warranty. Canon usually will send you new carts to replace the bad carts.

What country are you in ?

    Translation to español:

Saludos

Unplug the printer and open the lid and use a flashlight to see if anything is getting in the way of the printhead.

Also if you haven’t been using it in a while some ink could have dried and is acting like glue.

You may need to try and force the sponges to lower, just to break the seal.

    1. Hold down the power button until the printer turns off.

    2. If one does not work then unplug the printer for 10 minutes and then plug it back in.

    3. Possible paper jam or standard jam, inspect the printer careful and make sure no paper is stuck inside, the rear, the bottom, the back. Also there is a lot of the orange tape that needs to be removed, make sure you remove the stuff inside. You said you just unpacked it did you do any test printing?

    Dear Administrator,
    Many thanks for your reply.

I followed your instructions unfortunately 1 and 2 have not fixed the problem. As to point 3 there is no paper jam as I had not even got to putting in paper. I have double checked and am sure i have removed all orange tape. I have not been able to do a test print. The issue when I turn the printer on seems to be that the print cartridge carriage do does move to the centre for the print cassette to be inserted. No other buttons respond when the error is displayed and so haven’t been able to progress any further.

Many thanks in advance if you can help.

    1. Take out the carts and then take out the printhead and careful put the printhead and carts back in. Be sure to close the lever for the printhead.

    2. Check for anything on the timing strip. It’s a clear piece of plastic that is usually behind the printhead.

In the printer properties under Windows there is a tab labeled Maintenance. There are usually two choices, cleaning and deep cleaning. Try cleaning first and if that doesn’t work try deep cleaning.

The problem could be a cartridge that is not flowing though, if the cart is new maybe you didn’t tear all the plastic wrapper off and the breather hole is not breathing or the cart is old and not working properly anymore. It could also be the printhead or the printer itself.

i have a canon pixma mx700, it is just 1 month shy of the warranty(of course), i had received a fax when the alternating orange light(alarm) and the on/off(green) goes 12 times, and the in use/memory green light is solid. i turned it off and unplugged it but it is still flashing. i looked to see if there was any obstruction and sure enough there was a piece of paper that i took out but that didnt take of it. i opened it to see if there was anything visible, not to the eye but i did notice that the ink area was not moving to the left like how it usually does, it is stuck in the right side and wont budge. i was told could possibly be the purge unit for $100.
any other option before i have to take it in?

The purge unit has two sponges that rise and seal the printhead when it is parked at the left. If the printer hadn’t been used for a while some ink my have dried and is keeping the sponges from lowering. Also any obstruction that get’s into the gears would also keep the sponges from lowering.

You should get a flashlight and inspect that area as best you can and tried to gently push the sponges down.

Re: Canon MP830. Has been working great … but wanted to print out a legal document. Inserted legal paper into bottom tray (possibly shouldn’t have?) and immediately got error 6A00. After futzing with the machine for a while, then error 5110 came up which it has continued to be. I’ve checked everything. No paper jams, pieces of paper, anything in the machine. The ink sponges seem to be working fine. The carriage mechanism won’t automatically go back and forth, but slide fine.

Hard to believe that one minute it was working, the other it wasn’t. Have disconnected the machine, reconnected. Did all the button suggestions. Even unloaded/reloaded software. I don’t believe this machine is down for the count — just something wacky going on. Any suggestions? I’ve tried everything and am ready to stand on my head!

Legal Documents need to be printed from the top feeder.

You may need clear the error by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds.

    MX700
    - red ink nozzle was blocked, tried to do deep clean
    - during the deep cleaning, error code 5000->power on/off->error code 6a80
    - multiple power recycle did not help

    - head is stuck to the right parking side
    - power on->the head tries to move (it wiggles once or twice) and then the error code 6a80

    - i can’t move the head with my hand because it is stuck
    - there is no paper jam

    - i could not find the sponge to lower it
    - if the head is stuck at its right position (parking), how do i move it to the left side?

    - is there a disassembly guide?

    - your help will be greatly appreciated

The sponge is directly below where the head is currently sitting. Something may be jamming up the gears not allowing it to lower. Use a flashlight and see if you see any debris that got lodge in the gears.

    Hi,
I have a canon mp600… worked fab until recently, now it can’t print straight lines, they are wobbly & hit & miss but only in black. I’ve cleaned & deep cleaned several times & just tried to do a print head alignment, but it said it couldn’t do it & to refer to the manual. But i can’t find anything to tell me what to do!! :o(

Currently to anything 1/2 decent I have to print on high res paper on high quality ink… but even when it comes out it’s got a smudge round the print… like a dark glow!

The colour isn’t too bad…. it’s really around the black cartridges.

Any ideas at all would be appreciated!! :o)

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Check the inside of the printer and make sure that nothing is blocking the print head from moving around like some of that orange packing tape especially on the right side where the print head tries to park. The error code is a purge unit error.

    2. I’m assuming you have not actually printed anything yet. This would mean a bad print head or circuit board, contact Canon 1-800-828-4040, they will replace the print head, printer, etc

6A00 is a purge unit error. Something might be jamming the printhead on the right side where it normally parks. Also the two sponges are suppose to lower down and it might not be going all the way down.

Are you sure it’s a call error and not an operator error? 10 blinks is a duplex error. Usual cancel the print job and start over without the duplex selected. Is there an error code listed?

Definitely could be the print head, however I’m not sure the 6000 is worth investing money into. If it were a 6600 or 6700 I would consider it but the 6000 model wasn’t that great.

Hi- I have the MP600. Black ink is leaking, but I can’t find where it’s coming from - not obviously directly from the cartridge or print head(s) but there is a puddle of ink visible below the rollers from where the printed page emerges. Have tried all the usual ‘maintenance’ procedures. No error messages from the machine, just a mess. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi.
I have a Pixma IP4300 that worked perfectly for about 2 years. Now, it started printing very bad and than, suddenly, simply not printing at all. I tryied, as usual, some cleaning cycles, but only the colours seeme to work properly, while the BLACK simply printed no more. I replaced the 5PGBK cartridge with the correspondant (original CANON) one, but the printer litterally stopped working. More the green and yellow lights started blinking 10 times while the print head kept lying in the rest position on the extreme right of the machine. I turned off the printer, disconnected the power and USB cables twice but the computer always gave back a “B200″ error code. After this, at the third try to reconnect the power, the printer simply didn’t turn on no more. It looks like totally dead!!!
What might have been happened?? Is there any chance to fix somehow the problem?? Is there any technical way to turn on the machine by resetting the turning on procedure..??
Thanx a bunch in advance for your kindly help..

    Maybe try:

    1. Make sure the plug is properly plugged in the back.

    2. Remove the print head and power it up.

The life span of an inkjet printer can be short, there not built to last too long because HP, Canon and Epson want you to keep buying new models every few years. Sadly a new model will cost you less then repairing the old model.

Quadcore, first of all thanx a million for your kindly reply.
I’ve tried right on the attempt you suggested: honestly, it was the only one left to do that in fact I didn’t tried. But unlucky, the printer didn’t turned on neither with the print head removed… :-(((
Anyway, I wanna take the chance to add some few considerations about this weird habits of the producers. I totally agrre with you: it must exist a kind of a new commercial philosophy that, probably with the aim to let the sales constantly grow, has leaded some of the most glorious brands, in making great products but lasting at least 50% less than their natural life!! This way, these machines suddenly stops working without any apparent good reason…
I’ve already experienced previously something like that, because it happened to me with a mighty Canon S300, that gave me a ton of satisfactions and was working fine until it suddenly stopped printing at all; I took it at the technical assistance here in Rome (Italy), where they simply replaced the print head (I coulda gave done it on my own, don’t ya??). The cost?? Well, almost 60 Euros (Thieves!! The whole printer costed me brand new no more than 80 Euros..)!!! Anyway, said this, the printer only kept working (so and so..) for about 6 months more before to die again, so tha I finally threw it in the garbage as it was anti-economic to fix it again…
And this is, unlucky, the same stuff is gonna happen with the 4300 we’re talkin’ about. I think I have to throw it away even if it still loooks as brand new: but the point is that I don’t wanna fix it somehow and make me steal again almost the same money I would pay in buying a new printer!!
But, anyway, this is really a shame IMHO: they keep on talking us on how useful is the recycling, how worried they are for the pollution problems, how sick is the planet Earth… and than, they force up to throw away potentially still damn’ good appliances?? :-oI’ll never understand this, no way…

I have tried every suggestion I can find but nothing has worked.
The printer is a Canon MX700. The PROBLEM: is that it will print all colors except Black. This printer was replaced by Canon under warranty *for the exact same problem* about September 2009. I have replaced all of the print carts. I have run it through all of the cleaning, alignment cycles many times. Cleaning seems to make it worse. I have cleaned the printhead with alcohol. I even bought a new printhead on eBay. No Dice! If I let it sit a day or two in will print one page, maybe. But the second page will get steaks and dimmer and the third will basically have not black in on it at all. I talked to some guy in Texas who said it was the purge unit and he could tell me how to fix/clean it out, but if Canon was sending a new one just go ahead and take that route. Now I wish I had kept his name and number. Can this problem be solved or should I deep six it?
    Thanks, Carolyn.

Sounds like there is a known problem with that printer since you have already had it replaced once by Canon. I would call them again and complain until they send you yet another printer. The only MX printer I liked was the MX850 but truth be told the entire MX line seems like a watered down MP series.

The top door has a button that gets held down when it’s closed. If you can rig up something that holds that down it should print just fine albeit noisier then before.

Alternate blinking of power and resume button. (thats green and orange button alternate blinking.)
Also the cartridge carrier isn’t moving if you turn ON the power button.

I can’t get this into service mode. blinking persists after doing the service mode procedure.

I thought something might be stuck somewhere. How do I get the cartridge move to the left? Any switch to press to have it freely move to the left side?
