1. Install the latest driver: http://software.canon-europe.com/ , it is either Printer or Multifunctionals drop down menu that should have your model listed. Canon has newer drivers that support 10.5; look carefully because there may older drivers listed as well. Reboot after install.

2. Install CD Label Print 1.60 and launch it then follow the pictures:

Page Setup

-

Create your design and click print.

Click Print again.

Quality &Media

You may need to select composite document. Then click Save As PDF.

Open the PDF and you agian need to do a page setup.

PS: If you are an Adobe fan there are Print Direct templates for Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator in the Templates section.

I tried this fix and while it printed, the alignment was way off. Is there anything I can do to the settings of the pdf to make it work?

    Try this:

“”"”Thanks so much for this tip - it was driving me crazy. The software was working fine in my G5 Quad, but when I moved to the Mac Pro the “tray rejection” appeared again. I use OSX 10.4.10 on both machines. No matter how many reinstallations of the latest driver it did not go away. The PDF workaround works perfectly. Don’t forget to do a Page Setup in Preview and define the Printer Format before you print to CD, or you will get the problem that Rob had - it will print to one side.”"”"

My problem is that I choose all the settings in the Page Setup dialog, then hit PRINT in CD -LabelPrint and rather than being able to OK that and move on to the real print dialog, it tells me the settings are wrong. So I never get to the print dialog where I can choose to make a PDF.

    Any ideas?

My problem is that instead of it printing to a CD it would always print to a piece of paper instead.

The solution was to follow the “CD LabelPrint and OS X Guide” following the print settings and using them in Preview 3.0 for the PDF method. A crucial thing I found out is that under Quality & Media > Print Mode : “Printing a Composite Document” HAS to be selected. If I try to use “Printing a top-quality photo” (for better quality I would think) it disregards all other CD Tray settings and prints to paper instead. I hope this helps if any one else is frustrated by Canon’s crappy software and confounding drivers (why do I have to select CD Tray ~3 times? Isn’t once enough!?).

An easier workaround is to select ‘Preview’ rather than ‘Save as PDF’. This will create the pdf file and take you into the Preview software quickly and you simple print from there. For me, it also retains the settings for printing already set up in CD-Labelprint so there is nothing else needed.

Good to know I’m sure other frustrated OSX users will appreciate the tip.

I do wish Canon would revamp the software for both Windows and OSX though because it seems like their software is becoming slower & buggier.

Everything worked great on my MP970 with iMac G5. I suggest you disconnect the printer from the computer (USB or Firewire) and put paper in each tray (front and upper back). Then go thru the 5 steps very carefully.

After you complete that process, reconnect your printer to your computer and re-install your printer software from the disk that came with your printer. When using a Mac you do not have to uninstall the software. That is a PC necessity which is not necessary for the Mac.

Simply re-install and that process “overwrites” the existing driver, etc. Once you do that then you are on your way to some wonderful disk printing. Incidentally, I use Disc Cover program which comes with Printfolio, a BeLight software package. My thanks to everyone who published the 5 steps for us to use.

Hi thanks for this great post! one of the most useful that i have run across lately…would have never figured this out with my macbookpro on leopard with an canon i905D printer…kept rejecting the tray until i followed these instructions pretty close, but i just have to load the tray first, then click preview, and then print the preview. The only glitch is that all the colors are way off. It does look like its doing some composite printing or something else that’s just wrong. tried composite, photoquality., etc. even a black and white bmp image prints a shade of green. but all my designs print perfect on paper, so go figure. could it be the media itself…perhaps not absorbing the ink right? crazy stuff here between canon and apple. okay, next project, to get a lide35 canoscan working! cheers,

I would first try some better Mac software like Disc Label or Disc Cover and see if that fixes the problem then you know it’s canon’s software that is causing the problem.

Hi, I have finally managed to print on my cds and I’m absolutely thrilled with the results.

I was having such a terrible time trying to get my damn Canon pro9000 with my mac powerbook to print a cd that I was ready to give up. All the advice everyone has given is great and I’m so glad people post things like this. However, I tried everything that everyone suggested, downloading new drivers and CD Label application, following the order in which everything had to be done but to no avail. Nothing moved, just popping up signs saying the inner cover was open…&@$%^!!!

Finally, I had a blinding flash of inspiration…maybe I should open the rear support! And lo and behold it worked perfectly. This may be an obvious thing that most intelligent people may have already thought of but I’m merely admitting to my idiocy in the hope I can prevent some other poor soul from the frustration I have experienced; in my defense it says nowhere in the CD-R print guide or manual to do this. Happy printing!
    Cheers Jen.

I have installed the iP 4000r version 483(ej7) English Driver on my Mac OSX 10.4.11.

I do not see any CD-R tray B size or CD for Media type options

I do not see any of the following options for CD printing:
    1. Page set-up: Paper size for Tray B
    2. Quality & Media: Media Type: Printable disc
    3. Paper Source: CD Tray

Is the model 4000r driver made just for the US?

    Thanks

    @Joni

Did you do the steps for the iP4000?

What country are you in ?

Very simple, I had the same error 1851 when trying to print on a disc with the Canon iP4600 from my MacBook Pro.

    The solution is this:

    1) Close the inner cover on the printer, leave the outer cover open. Don’t argue, just do it.
    2) Click ‘print’ in your document in LabelPrint while the inner cover is closed. Yes I know.
    3) Wait a minute while the printer jigs about a bit.
    4) You will then be prompted to insert the disc tray
    5) Open the inner cover and insert the disc tray and - Bingo! it works.

The way the software is set up is pretty daft as it’s counter-intuitive to try and print on a CD while the inner cover is closed but then when were Canon ever known for their software design?
