You have done the Five Easy Steps and everything seems to have worked but it keeps kicking the tray back out and telling you that there is no cd-r or the inner door is open, these are some of the things that might be causing it:

• CDRS=(000) should be something other then zero’s, if it’s zero’s then you should repeat the five steps. You can find CDRS numbers by enter service model as instructed for your model and then pressing the {resume} or {stop/reset} button twice and then the power button. (Sometimes it will be 000 and still work though)
• Try an EPROM reset: http://damnprinter.com/?p=50 some models require this procedure.
• Fully uninstall the driver using the actual uninstaller.exe, then reinstall.
• After clicking print in cd label print wait until the screen tells you to insert the tray otherwise it will reject the tray because it’s not ready for it yet.
• Sometimes unplugging the USB cable and then plugging it back in will fix the problem. This is more a Windows issue.
• Sometimes the USB cable is bad, try another cable.
• You have place a cd/dvd that already has printing on it, the sensors will detect this and eject the tray. This feature is found in the printer preferences under the maintenance tab, click custom settings then uncheck the box call “Detects a printable disc on the cd-r tray”. After trying this be sure to turn it back on because it’s intended as a safety feature.
• CD Label Print and Mac OSX seem to have a real problem with tray rejection but there is a work around for it which can be found here: http://damnprinter.com/?p=181

Please please help. I have been working on this for a few weeks now…made several trays..could not get it to work..finally ordered tray from e-bay and I still can’t get it to work. I am so very very frustrated…have spent hours and hours trying to make this work. I have ip600d and i have gotten to point where it says The CD-R tray is not inserted or a printable disc is not placed on the CD-R Tray.
Insert the CD-R tray with a printable disc in the Inner Cover and then press the RESUME button.
Printing will then restart.
I am crying right now.

I’m in the US and just bought an MP610. I read quite a bit on this forum about enabling the CD/DVD print tray but have a couple of questions:

1)I haven’t opened the printer yet. Should or can I perform the 5-step without attaching the printer to the computer and loading the software - then buy the tray or do I need the tray first?

2)Step (3.) says to load the software that came with the printer but in the “kicking the tray out & no cd-r or inner door open” mod it says to load the latest software from Europe. Which is correct?

3)I find it hard to understand the steps of the “kicking the tray out & no cd-r or inner door open.” Steps 1-3 say to uninstall the driver, EPROM reset, then download European version of cd label software. Then step 4 talks about clicking print cd label. Now, at some time (like after the EPROM reset) am I supposed to re-do the 5-step process? What I’m asking is, does the EPROM reset remove the cd/dvd enabling commands in the five step process?

4)Again in the steps of the “kicking the tray out & no cd-r or inner door open.” Step 5 talks about ROM page prints before/after. This seems to be steps 2.g and 2.j – correct?

Any other warnings for the MP610 appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike Goetzke:

Your making it too complicated, I suggest this:

1. Open the box and setup the printer, hook it up to the computer and install the driver. Print out some sheets or photos to be sure the printer is in good working order.

2. Do the steps for your model to enable the cd print feature: http://damnprinter.com/?p=138

3. Launch CD Label Print, create a new design that you want and then print it.

4. Success!

If you do get a tray rejection problem then the Tray Rejection Guide will help you troubleshoot the problem: http://damnprinter.com/?p=176

The last person who had trouble with the door is close error had to unplug the USB cable and then plug it back in. It may be the same bug….try and it and see if that’s the problem.

I had a Pixma 4200 for ~2 years, but never tried to print a CD until today. I got the dreaded “CD-R tray is not inserted…” message on my first few attempts with the associated ejecting of the tray, so I did some research and ended up on this site. I spent about 3 hours trying everything posted here, from the 5 easy steps for 4200 to the general hints listed above, going through several driver reinstalls (different versions), EPROM resets, various types of printable discs etc. Nothing worked.

In the end, exhausted, I stopped and just watched the damn printer spitting my tray out a few times. Guess what : the problem was a simple mechanical one - the printer wasn’t able to pull the CD tray completely inside (I don’t know crap about its inner workings so I won’t venture to guess why).
All it needed was to apply a slight, constant inward pressure on the tray, right after the printer started pulling it in. Once the tray was sucked in, it worked right away and printed perfectly.

Now, I admit I may be an idiot for not trying this earlier. But my wasted time will not be completely wasted if whoever wrote the above guide will add another line describing how much exactly is the tray supposed to go in before being ejected for whatever reason, and a suggestion to push it gently if doesn’t go all the way. This might spare a few people the annoyance and frustration.

There are arrows on the tray and arrows on the inner door which you are suppose to line up. The video on the front page also shows the printing process.

In your particular case though the wheels may not be getting the proper grip that is needed.

For anyone who’s have the dreaded “inner door is closed” error message while trying to print DVD/CD’s - I found that by pressing the “Paper Source” button on the front of the printer got it working again! Even though the paper source button only shows LEDs for the top and bottom PAPER trays (at least on my ip4500), apparently it can also select/lockout the cd printing tray. I fought with this damn printer for hours - reinstalling driver, resetting EEPROM, trying different USB cables etc. And all along I just needed to press a button. Don’t you just love computers? LOL

Hope this helps someone else out there.

The “inner door is closed” error is usually caused by a sensor problem in the inner door. Sometimes the little arm comes loose and doesn’t get pushed when you lower the door.

My printer is brand new so I doubt that was my problem. It worked fine for a day then I started getting the error. I tried everything mentioned on this site and nothing worked. But as soon as I pressed the “Paper Source” button, the printer pulled the cd tray in and printed the disc.

I’m not saying that the solutions here aren’t valid, but you may want to add the “Paper Source” button to the list of things to try.

Ok.. so the error is back again >:-(

Is there anyway to fix the little arm on the inner door so it engages the sensor correctly?

Try wiggling the door or raising it a little bit. Also get a flashlight and look carefully at the hinges on either side if they can be seen on that model. Most models have an open U that points down and it can slide out of the bottom of the open U. Some models have a wire spring that can sometimes be dislodged from it’s proper place.

The sensor and circuit could also be buggy and just sometimes not recognize that the door is down.

Looks like the sensor/circuit is the culprit. I can get the printer to print on CD’s by giving the printer a sharp tap on the left side, or by jiggling the flat panel inside the printer that runs left-right under the printhead (the inner door’s little arms raise this to allow the cd to be inserted - not sure exactly what it is called).

I assume there’s no easy fix for this. Is this a common problem? I have a replacement on its way and don’t want to deal with this again.

First post on here. I’m about at my wits end trying to get this printer to stop rejecting the CD tray and have invested way too much time fooling with it.

I have carefully read all the instructions and advice on this site, but I just can’t get it to work.

I have a Canon iP4500, and am using it with my iMac (running Leopard, OS X 10.5.2).

I bought the CD-F tray on eBay and some writeable CDs and DVDs. I have gone through the 5 steps at least a dozen times and successfully set the printer to EUR and the CDRS value changed from 0000 to 0030 (it now stays at that setting every time I redo the steps). I have reset the EPROM, following those instructions. I have reinstalled the appropriate iP4500 driver (6.9.2) from the Canon website multiple times. I have followed the Mac OS X tray rejection recommendations for page setup and printing to Preview first, then trying to print to CD from there. Every time, without fail, I get the dreaded bouncing printer in the dock and the error message:
Error Number : 1851 Printing cannot be executed because the Inner Cover is open. 1. Check that the CD-R tray has been removed. 2. Close the Inner Cover, and then press the RESUME button on the printer. Printing will restart.
This thing just will not accept that CD tray for printing.

I just don’t know what to do next. I’ve tried it all as far as I can see. Am I going to have to get an Epson if I want to print on CDs?

Any help appreciated. Thanks for letting me vent.

I’m going to assume you are using Canon CD Label Print v1.6 ???

You have two options:

1. Try another software like Adobe PS and a template or whatever software Mac’s have, I’m sure there are a couple designed for cd printing.

2. Test it on a Windows machine.

It sounds like the hardware part is done but Canon CD Label Print is the problem. It works fine under Windows but has a lot of bugs with Mac’s.

Thanks for the reply. That appears to be it. I installed the Canon printer and the CD LabelPrint software on my Windows XP work laptop. It works like a charm from there and makes beautiful prints. So it must be the Mac version of the software that’s giving me grief.

I wish they’d fix the software. However, I intend to load a copy of XP Pro onto the iMac under Boot Camp and so I should be able to run it from that.

Once again, thanks for the help.

I just got the mp970 and I am on a Mac it seems like the fix was listed on this site but you print form the cd printer go to print like normal but select print preview, when preview opens up, its important you go to the file menu and select print make sure everything in here is setup correctly and it works. Kind of hokey but hopefully canon will fix that soon enough.

** FOR THE PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THE ‘ inner door is closed’ ERROR **

You need to go into printer settings > ‘quality & media’ > select ‘printable disc’ either recommended or others.
This tells your printer that you are printing on a disk, otherwise it thinks you are printing on paper.

Good luck!

Hi QuadCore, This is not solving the problem. I use an InDesign CD template. It worked perfectly on my G5 running Tiger 10.4.11. Now that I have upgraded to a Mac Pro, I am running Leopard 10.5.4, I am getting the Error 1851. I have stripped out ALL native printer drivers, downloaded and installed the (supposedly) 10.5 supported driver from BOTH the US and European Canon sites, rebooted, powered the printer off and on. All settings specified in printer dialog box and printer setup box are specifying CD Tray - so no mistakes there.

I have success printing from my daughter’s MacBook which is running Tiger 10.4.11. It works JUST AS IT ALWAYS DID. So I can prove this is a software issue. I can not figure out a way to get CD printing working running Leopard on a new Intel Mac.

Did you try to use any other software to see if the problem is with leopard 10.5 and InDesign?

There is plenty of Mac software for cd printing that comes with a trial that would be useful for troubleshooting.

Hi. I don’t believe the issue is with InDesign and Leopard, since I can print the template out JUST FINE on paper. Once you switch to the settings for the CD tray, it won’t work. If you know of a quality CD label printing SW please recommend one that is good. CD Label Print is a joke. I have a custom InDesign template set up with styles, etc. for various purposes, so I am loathe to give that up. I suppose I could try PhotoShop, but it might take some time fooling around to get the template sized right.

As a designer I want to be in control of the design parameters in the same way you can in InDesign. So something that is geared to that level would be great. Do let me know which you think comes closest and I will give it a go. But as I said, I am scratching my head trying to figure out why it will print fine on paper and not to CD.

The fact that it worked with Tiger and not on Leopard means that something is wrong with the printer properties settings. The dialog boxes are different for Leopard and so the print tray is not being properly selected.

I have an MP960 that was working beautifully after performing the five easy steps. After a recent power blink, the printer firmware somehow got set to Japanese settings. The LCD display was all in Japanese, so I reset the language to English, thinking all was good. Then I just tried printing a CD, and kept getting the ejection error. I redid the five easy steps, but the problem persisted despite it showing EUR. I read elsewhere on these forums that the CDRS value should be a non-zero value, and mine was CDRS=(0000). After trying the five easy steps again, I changed the location back to the US by hitting Stop/Reset twice instead of four times. I printed the ROM sheet, and voila! it now showed CDRS=(0058). I changed the location back to EUR, and the ejection problem is fixed as well.

mx850 - “Insert CD-R tray” problem.

I have done the 5 easy steps, set to EUR, the driver sees the tray, but the tray is sucked in and spit out - as if it is not recognized.

(1) Is it possible that the F tray for this new model is different (maybe it has a chip on it, or something)?

(2) Is it possible to program the EPROM not to check the validity of the tray?

I did everything stated on the Tray Rejection General Guide (exc. Mac OSX, since I’m using Win XP).
5 easy steps agaio, EPROM reset, uninstall & reinstall the US driver, tried different cables, unchecked the Detect printable disc,

(3) CDRS=0000 (how else can I change this?)

I have used the CD Label Print and Acoustic programs (same result).

(4) Has anyone had any experience with or additional info for the mx850, or other suggestions?

1. Did you wait until you were told to put the tray in the slot?

2. CDRS=0000 is probably the problem, repeat the steps again.

3. step g: Press Stop/Reset button once then Power this will print a service mode page.

Muse:

You had problems with your model but that does happen and it has nothing to do with EUR or AUS settings. It also doesn’t have anything to do with the CDR SENSOR=OK because that is just a basic check of that sensor when printing out a service mode printout. The CDRS=0000 is an offset number which is usually something other then zero’s on most models but once in awhile it’s zero.

I’ve seen this a lot over the years where the model finally works and people think that is the solution then and everyone should do the same but it’s just buggy firmware.

This recommendation from “jeremiah g” worked for me!

“Guess what : the problem was a simple mechanical one - the printer wasn’t able to pull the CD tray completely inside (I don’t know crap about its inner workings so I won’t venture to guess why). All it needed was to apply a slight, constant inward pressure on the tray, right after the printer started pu and whose printers and a fair bit of use lling it in. Once the tray was sucked in, it worked right away and printed perfectly.”

Even when the tray feed fails it always pulls in a very short distance before ejecting again. The slightest inward pressure applied to the rear of the tray just as it is pulled in is all that is needed — barely more than a feather touch.

I then noticed that I could occasionally hear “wheel spin” as the tray moved back and forward to get the alignment right — a sound like as if the feed wheels were not getting a good grip on the tray. Inspecting the underside of the tray showed scuff marks on the plastic consistent with this theory.

From that observation I assume it might be time to have the tray feed mechanism serviced. Perhaps the feed wheels have worn, or become gummed up with crap, or maybe even the mechanism has worked slightly out of alignment with lots of use over time.

This remedy is probably more likely to work for people who have successfully printed on CDs in the past, and whose printers have had a fair bit of use.

Hi QuadCore,

I am not sure what you mean, since I specified in my post that all InDesign settings for the printer were specifying the CD tray. In all settings boxes the CD print tray is selected. Could you be more specific - are you referring to something else?

In the InDesign print setup window, the Setup correctly identifies Paper Size as CD Tray.
In the InDesign Page Setup, the Paper Size is correctly identified as CD Tray.

Not sure what other printer property settings I could check.

OK, after much troubleshooting, I gained a clue from the people having the same problem with the CD Label print forum it appears that the InDesign print dialog box has something similar. Even though the InDesign print window the setup is selected to CD Tray, the Page Setup is selected to CD tray, this additional step is necessary:
Create a Custom Preset set to CD Tray, then in the InDesign print window, click on the Printer button and make sure that CD Tray preset is selected. All 3 steps need to be taken in order for this to work under Leopard.

I recently bought a 2nd hand ip4200, specially for CD printing (UK spec, the test sheet confirms it).. worked fine on paper printing but would it print a CD? Of course not, neither from the Mac (OS 10.4) not the PC (XP) .. then saw a comment on another forum about cleaning the CD tray.
Even though mine had never been used (still in its wrapper) I cleaned the shiny bits on the tray, with a spectacle-cleaning wipe and solvent. Then wrapped some paper towel over the edge of a piece of thin, flat plastic (modified top of a Chinese takeaway tub), with a little more of the solvent, and pushed this to and fro in the slot to attempt to clean whatever sensors are in there.
Tried again .. printed clean as a whistle, very smart
No guarantees it will keep on doing it but thought it would be worth sharing!
Good luck all and thanks for the website :)
