The ink on those printers is very expensive. I think that:

ip3000 Good resolution, a little slow
ip4000 Good resolution, a bit faster
    ip5000 Excellent resolution, fast.

are the best printers. I could buy the replacement ink for them for $7 / set. (all colors plus black)

… too bad they are discontinued…. I believe due to the fact that replacement ink is widely available.

Those are all great printers but the IP4300 is equal to those and now there is replacement ink carts for them.

You do need to remove the circuit from the old one to the new ones and hold the resume button to bypass the warning and it does turn off the ink measuring which sucks but at least the carts are clear and you can see how much ink is ink them.

For a refiller or third party cartridge user the older thinktank system was better and less glitchy way to use generic ink.

I would rather pay more money upfront for a printer and have the option to use what ink I would want but it seems Canon, HP and Epson are waging a market share battle selling their printers for less then they cost to make and then making up for it in ink and paper.

This certainly got my attention; I agree that it seems as though the printer manufacturers are intending to make their revenue on the ink!
I just got a Canon PIXMA MP800, and in a VERY short time learned that it will keep me in the poor-house…OR ink-supplied. But not both! In addition, they won’t cooperate with the services who set up to refill the cartridges…at half the cost of new ones! I believe there is some better market strategy–and we’ll see it soon. BUT maybe not with the brand names that are NOW building that highway from userland to the poor house! Come-on Canon!

I currently own an i560 which works flawlessly and I managed to find bulk ink that matches perfectly.
Thinking to buy the PIXMA iP4300 for the CD print capability. But if I understand correctly, there’s no way to refill the cartriges?
