1. Remove the black plastic

This can be done very easily with a screw driver. Just lower the door down and slide a flathead screwdriver down behind the plastic piece and very gently push forward.

Be very careful not to damage the soft bendable plastic, might want to wrap the screwdriver in tape first so it doesn’t scrap the plastic either.

I recommend placing the screwdriver in at one end, don’t try it in the middle.

It should pop out without much effort.

2. Enter Service Mode

a. The printer should be plugged in but turned off.

b. Hold Stop/Reset button and Power button for 5 seconds

c. Release Stop/Reset button but continue to hold Power button

d. Press Stop/Reset twice

e. Release the Power Button

f. Wait for Copy Light to stop blinking before proceeding.

g. Press Stop/Reset button 1 time then Power this will print a service printout.

h. Press Stop/Reset 5 times then power to select Destination.

i. Press Stop/Reset 4 times then Power to choose Euro.

j. Press Stop/Reset button 1 time then Power this will print a service printout again.

k. Press Power button Twice to save settings.

3. Install the Driver

The USA driver will work just fine, it is on the CD that came with your printer. If the driver was already installed because you have been using the printer before you found this wonderful page, you will need to UNINSTALL it and RE-INSTALL it.

Advanced Option: How to change the Registry Key

4. Install Software

a. CDLabelPrint
b. Nero Cover Designer
c. Acoustica CD Label maker

CD Label Print is OK but some users would prefer other software to create there designs in so I have links to other software such as Nero Cover Designer and Acoustica. If you use Adobe there is a template for it as well: Adobe InDesign template

5. Purchase a Tray

You will need to purchase a tray for the printable cd or dvd to sit on. To know what Tray Letter you need simply look at the properties after you have finished:

Purchase a Canon cd tray on eBay. http://search.ebay.com/

I recently bought an MP600 here in North America and then acquired a printer tray F for printing cd/dvds. I followed the 5 Easy Steps for the MP600 - took out the guard, reconfigured the hardware ROM to now say EUR, reinstalled the drivers to now offer CD Tray as an option on printer properties, and even confirmed the registry entry set to one. But yet when I try to print and am asked to insert the tray, it takes the tray all the way in, and then ejects it completely and then tells me that there’s no cd tray inserted.

Have I done something wrong? Would welcome any advice.

    Hey Chris,

I’m not sure what the problem is but it appears that some printers can be difficult to enable. Some users have to repeat the process a dozen times before they get it working and then they say they didn’t do anything different it just worked this time.

The eprom reset sometimes works at fixing the tray rejection problem, apparently it didn’t work for you this time.

Canon might have made some changes to the firmware which can be affecting the process on newer models but I haven’t seen enough info on this yet.

Same problem with my MP600. Even though the CD printing seems to be otherwise enabled the printer rejects the tray every time. Tried the EPROM reset twice and reinstalled the drivers, but the problem persists. Has anyone actually gotten the MP600 to work with CD tray F? If so, how many times did it take to perform the EPROM reset and/or the 5 easy steps?

Same with mine. I’ve reset the EPROM, done the 5 steps many times (I think I’m up to 10) and still it kicks out.
More info; it shows up on the LCD Pixma menu with the CD/DVD copier item and lets you try to print a cd but still kicks it back out from the same point.
Do you think it’s possible that Canon changed something on the print head unit to not read the tray mirrors anymore? I purchased mine in December (with confidence that I could enable the CD function later).

This is a big bummer. I hope Canon of USA knows about this blog and is ashamed they removed this from our versions. A completely nonsensical decision on their part!

    Finally got it to work!.

I had the problem with the tray rejection, and could not get past that point. I can’t tell you how many times I redid the steps, just to verify I didn’t mess up somewhere. (I can even do them in my sleep now)

I did notice, that when I did the reset the ROM and then powered up, and had to reassign the language etc, that when it did the head alignment, it would always try to use the autofeed and not the cassette for paper.

I ended up putting several sheets in the autofeeder, did the ROM printout, then following that, did a single Stop/Reset & Power, and the CD Sensor showed up on the report.

All work! Thanks to everyone for all their work on this.

Now to get to business ……

Has there been a firmware change with the MP600?

I get into the printer settings, using the startup methods, but it just says Canon on the top line and says Idle, and kicks out a blank sheet of paper, but never goes into any choices on the menu. If I press the stop/reset buttons like directed, it takes the Idle word off the screen, but never prints out a confirmation sheet.

I followed the instructions here ( I thought ) and I could not get the CD-R to be recognized by my MP600.

After a few tries, I finally got it to work…

Make sure that you have paper loaded in BOTH the bottom paper tray and the ‘other’ paper input. I had
photo paper loaded in the ‘other’ paper input and I removed it because I didn’t want to waste / use it
while I did this printer reset, so the first couple of times I tried this, I only had paper loaded in
    the bottom tray…

I ‘think’ that the stop 1 / power -vs- stop 2 / power selects the two different print trays. When I did the
stop button once and then play… it loaded paper from the ‘other’ paper source and it printed some sort of
alignment page… in my earlier testing with paper loaded ONLY in the bottom paper tray, I never got this
alignment page. The alignment page says CDRS=(0000) on it… after I printed this alignment page, I pressed
the stop button 2 times and then the power button and I got a TEXT page printed ( from the bottom paper
tray ) that I had managed to print serveral times already… in all pervious cases, I had CDRS=(0000) and
after getting the alignment page printed, the TEXT page printed and this time it had CDRS=(0072)

… I just noticed… on the bottom of the alignment page that printed, it says ( in red ) CDR SENSOR=OK.

I also just used the regedit method to enable the software on the printer… I didn’t re-load all of the
    drivers.

I think that the 6 blinks is telling you that it can’t load paper from the source that you selected… I think…

make sure you have plain paper loaded in both the bottom tray and the ‘other’ paper source.

    Kevin and Jack:

The 6 blinking lights mean the inner door is down when you are trying to print on paper.

    Jack:

There are two different printouts a simple service mode and an eprom printout. They serve different purposes. For our purpose here we just use them to verify that the mode has changed to Euro.

The reason it didn’t work was because the CDRS was still zero which does happen and would cause a Tray Rejection.

    Hello all,
I have an MP610 which I think a minor upgrade version of MP600, and I heard that it’s capable of printing on CD-R like MP600. I did all the measures including EPROM reset many times. But you know, it keeps kicking back the dann tray. Why can’t I change the “CDRS=(0000)” to some non-zero value? What should do I do? Please help me…

I recently purchased the MP610 as well and was able to get it to work on the first try (lucky I guess). This was done to the printer straight out of the package, brand new and never hooked up to my computer. Here are the steps that worked for me:

    1) Removed the black plastic (took me awhile to realize that you have to drop down the door that is in front of the ink well to access it) - the black plastic is really just a piece Canon clips in to cover up the cd tray rollers - very easy to remove and it doesn’t break, simply should unclip)

    2) Got into Service Mode by following the instructions 2a –> 2e. (If the orange light on the right part of the control panel is blinking 6 times, it means that you need to put the inner door back up to its original position.) Waited until the green light on the left stopped blinking, then proceeded to 2g.

    3) ROM page printed and showed it was in USA settings, CDRS = 0000.

    4) Ran through 2h –> 2j (pressing Stop/Reset twice at 2j), this time the page said EUR setting at the top, but CDRS was still 0000.

    5) Saved settings (2k) and turned off the printer.

    6) Ran through steps 2a –> 2e again, ROM report still shows EUR and CDRS=0000.

    7) Ran through 2h –> 2j again, this time pressing the Stop/Reset button only once. This time, a different ROM page printed, which was in color and looked like a combination of a print head aligment and ROM settings. At the bottom of the print out in red was CDR SENSOR=OK

    8) Saved settings (2k), turned off the printer.

    9) Ran steps 2a –> 2g, the ROM page had CDRS=0063. Saved settings and turned off the printer.

    10) Installed drivers to the computer, following the instructions included from Canon.

    11) Put a CD in the tray (purchased from eBay, it’s Tray F for those looking), lowered the door and pushed the tray into the slot.

    12) Followed instructions #5, printer retracted the tray, printed on the CD, and completed the job. Although I have to work on aligning the design sheet to actually print perfectly centered on the CD, the actual process of printing worked perfectly.

    Hope this helps!

Finally I got it to work! My MP610 prints on CD perfectly. Thank you guys so much. For MP610 users(probably MP600 users too), I would recommend to follow Sharpie’s guide above exactly. Especially, “7) Ran through 2h –> 2j again, this time pressing the Stop/Reset button only once. ” is the key point. Read my lips, “pressing the Stop/Reset button ONLY ONCE.” As a precaution, open the rear tray and load it with some paper while you’re doing the above operations. I guess that has some bearing on the success. Thanks again!

    That’s specious thinking SK Kim:

The two different printouts have nothing to do with the trouble you were having, the CDRS=xxxx can be stubborn.

One printout is a simple service mode printout and the second is a EPROM printout.

Whoa you wrote a book almost :)

Anyways I’m glad you got it working. The difference between 1 or 2 times for the printouts doesn’t have anything to do with the cdrs=xxxx or the tray rejection. The problems appears to be just the MP series being more stubborn at enabling the cdr sensor.

Just a couple comments in case some people had the same trouble that I had getting their MP610 printer to recognize the tray.

First, I followed instructions 2a-2f exactly, but when I got to step 2g, I too was confused with the printout produced. The instructions are great, but It would help to say what we are to look for and compare. Only by reading the posts did I know to look for a value other than zero for the CDRS value. As SK Kim noted, it’s easier to find this value on the printout produced by pressing Stop/Reset only once.

Second, it may be just my expectation, but when I performed Step 2h “Press Stop/Reset 5 times then Power to select Destination”, I thought that I was to be presented a menu from which to select the destination. Same with step 2i. Thought I was going to get a menu to choose Euro. Finally it hit me (after restarting many times, and seeing nothing but Idle), I had already selected the Destination by just pressing the correct buttons in the right order.

When this still didn’t work, I figured I had to do an EPROM reset since I had already been using the printer for a while. Did the reset, followed the instructions (from a different perspective), and it worked.
Thanks to all who posted. It really helped.

I put a basic guide up when the MP600 first came out and never went back and finished it but it has 99% of the info needed. Also CDRS=xxxx is usually only located on the EPROM printout that is printed when you press stop/reset twice and power once.

PS: The comments are intended to answer any detailed questions.

You need to do the five steps for your model, this enables the feature on the printer. Then use the registry edit or uninstall and reinstall the printer driver to add the item to the printer properties menu. —

    @Manny Noela:

Many people who struggle getting it working confuse what the Service Mode and ROM print outs have to do with the process. The answer is NONE. People have enabled the feature without doing any printouts. The printouts are visual confirmation that the process has succeeded.

Sometimes the feature refuses to enable and the steps need to be repeated and also the eprom reset needs to be done.

If for some strange reason the printouts where necessary to enable the feature then there could be a bug in firmware of the model that you have purchased. That is a possibility.

Thanks Admin and all the other posters here:

I received my TrayF today and attempted installing it on my MP610. I followed the admins directions:

    1. The black plastic came off pretty easily - in fact, it can even be done with a long finger nail — but I just used a blunt table knife, and it came off. the pictures in the gallary really helped.

    2. I went into service mode by following the instructions 2a –> 2e, waited until the green light on the left stopped blinking(2f), before proceeding to the 2g.

    3) The ROM page printed showing the USA settings as CDRS = 0000.

    4) I went through 2h and 2i several times, waiting for amessage to appear on screen telling me that the destination had changed to EURO, but never got that message. Later, i remember I read somewhere on this forum that the process itself sets the destination. Admin, it would be good if you could edit the instructions 2h and 2i on the main page to indicate this — i.e., that users should not look for any confirmation on the LCD, and that pressing Stop/Reset 5x gets into destination mode, and pressing Stop/Reset 4x sets the destination to EURO

    5) I went to 2j pressed Stop/Reset ONCE, then power (on/off button) to print the 2nd ROM page (the one with the colored patches, just like alignment pages). The CDRS value was still USA (i.e., CDRS=0000).

    6. I saved the settings, went back through 2a - 2g. The first ROM print (at 2g printed CDRS=0062), and the second at 2j printed CDRS=0062, with SET=EUR.

    7. I saved my settings.

    8. I hooked up the printer to my Dlink Dp-300U print server along side an existing HP6L which uses the parallel port, and I can print to the Canon. I reinstallled the drives and can see the CD-Tray. I also installed the Canon Label Print software.

    9. BUT my Taiyo Yuden glossy watershield printables have not arrived yet. - it should get here on Friday. So here I am, ready to test this beautiful baby, but without adequate equipment to do the job.

I am eager to test whether the printer will accept the Tray without rejecting it ……is there any way to test this, without using a printable CD?

    Thanks again - Manny

I own a MP610, but have been using Light Scribe - it’s great, but slow…

So, after finding this site, thought I’d try turning the mp610 into a DVD Printer - it worked perfectly!

I followed Sharpie’s directions to a T. However, even after my CDRS numbers changed, the drivers were updated and reinstalled, and the CD Printer software was installed - my printer was still rejecting the tray and telling me “the door is open”. My success came after I performed the additional steps of the EPROM reset.

Great site! And the printing on Memorex Printable DVDs is amazing too!

Sincere thanks for sharing the knowledge,

    I own an MP610.

I was thrilled to find this site and found the instructions very clear. As soon as I read that this was possible I jumped on EBay and ordered a tray. I really appreciate the effort the Administrator put forth to provide us with this site and instructions, and to go so far as to include photos.

However, I have to tentatively agree with Sharpie and SK Kim. I tried the five steps, uninstalling (using uninstall.exe) and reinstalling drivers, the EPROM reset, getting a new cable, everything many times over several days! Always pressing Stop/Reset twice to print the ROM sheet. After each time I ran through the steps, I got the option to print to the cd tray on my computer in the printer settings screen and got new menus on the printer’s LCD for printing to DVD/CD, but everytime I tried I got the error that the CD tray was not attached.

I followed Sharpie’s advice in his step #7 where you only press Stop/Reset once and got the color page he’s talking about. My CDRS still seems to be CDRS=(0000), but I got the red CDR SENSOR=OK message next to a barcode that has MP610EUR under it.

Used the Adobe Photoshop template I found through this site and now it all works perfectly!

I don’t know enough about the inner workings of all this stuff to argue about one print-out versus another, but it certainly worked for me. I know it is most likely just be a freak coincidence that it finally worked when I pressed stop/resume once to print the color ROM sheet, but it may be worth a try for anyone struggling with an MP610.

I made the changes when my new MP610 was fresh out of the box, before connecting the printer and before installing the printer driver. I don’t know if that affected my luck. I did not have to touch the Registry.

Here is my problem- I can make it through step 2f above, after which I have a window on the screen that says “setup” and “idle”. Any button pressing after that results in either the printer turning off or toggling between idle and nothing.

Also, I can’t see how the printer can print from the front opening- unless I am missing a cartridge or something, the paper is too low for the roller to bring in. I have tried rear and front feeders, both with no luck.

    Can anyone help me?

    Mike

Try to finish the steps and ignore the LCD display.

The front opening has a inner door that lowers down. This where the tray gets feed into.

Sadly the MP640 cannot be enabled. The ones listed are the only ones supported.

Is it that the MP640 cannot be enabled because it is too new? What is the showstopper?

The tray holder and rollers are in the printer. Oddly, when I looked for the CD-LabelPrint software at the Euro-Canon web site, there was none available for the MP640 (yet the Euro version of this printer clearly has the CD/DVD label print feature). Also, Tray G is supposed to be compatible with the MP640.
