1. Remove the black plastic

This can be done very easily with a screw driver. Just lower the door down and slide a flathead screwdriver down behind the plastic piece and very gently push forward.

Be very careful not to damage the soft bendable plastic, might want to wrap the screwdriver in tape first so it doesn’t scrap the plastic either.

I recommend placing the screwdriver in at one end, don’t try it in the middle.

It should pop out without much effort.

2. Enter Service Mode

a. The printer should be plugged in but turned off.

b. Hold Stop/Reset button and Power button for 5 seconds

c. Release Stop/Reset button but continue to hold Power button

d. Press Stop/Reset twice

e. Release the Power Button

f. Wait for Copy any Light to stop blinking before proceeding. (The light differs depending on the model you have.)

g. Press Stop/Reset button 1 time then Power this will print a service print out.

h. Press Stop/Reset 5 times then power to select Destination.

i. Press Stop/Reset 4 times then Power to choose Euro.

j. Press Stop/Reset 1 time then Power to print a service print out again.

k. Press Power button Twice to save settings.

3. Install the Driver

The USA driver will work just fine, it is on the CD that came with your printer. If the driver was already installed because you have been using the printer before you found this wonderful page, you will need to UNINSTALL it and RE-INSTALL it.

Advanced Option: How to change the Registry Key

4. Install Software

a. CD Label Print 1.30
b. Nero Cover Designer
c. Acoustica CD Label maker

CD Label Print is OK but some users would prefer other software to create there designs in so I have links to other software such as Nero Cover Designer and Acoustica. If you use Adobe there is a template for it as well: Adobe InDesign template

5. Purchase a Tray

You will need to purchase a tray for the printable cd or dvd to sit on. To know what Tray Letter you need simply look at the properties after you have finished:

How do you “undo” the mod and return it to factory spec defaults (in case I’m having to deal with tech support, etc.)?

The “Five Easy Steps” does indeed work on the MP830. As a genuine computer novice, I must add that I went into this activity with some anxiety. So I’m writing to inform some of the readers what to look for. First, don’t bother looking at that little function display as it basically does nothing. Look for the blinking light to stop blinking on the “copy” button. THEN, after that single page ROM is printed out examine the upper left corner of the page. EVENTUALLY it will go from US to EUR.
Once you see the “EUR” you have arrived. IF you don’t examine the page, you’ll be doing this over and over till the cows come home. There is no tell tale fireworks display or big band sounds to tell you when you’ve succeeded. Also, while doing this, consider a crossword puzzle or just surf the web. The process isn’t lightening fast, but certainly under 5 minutes. If you screw up, start over at the beginning. Lastly, The size D tray was purchased on ebay for under 12 bucks.

I have been trying to do this on my MP830 with GREAT difficulty.
I could do these manuevers on my ip6600D, but I cannot do it on my MP830.
When I press the STOP/RESET button and hold it then add the POWER button and hold them both for at least 3-5 seconds, I release the STOP/RESET Button and continue holding the POWER BUTTON.
Then I press the STOP/RESET Button 2 times and TOTALLY release all buttons.

Everything eventually goes blank, all blinking stops and all lights go out (This tells me it is in OFF MODE and NOT SERVICE MODE.) Because when I press the STOP/RESET Button NOTHING HAPPENS at all.

Then when I press the POWER Button everything Turns Back On.

So I cannot even get the printer to print out a report telling me which region I am in US or EUR.

    Help Please…!!!
    Thanks

    Just so you know…
I do Press the STOP/RESET Button twice and nothing prints out. If I press the POWER Button after that then it all recycles and is active again is 30-60 seconds.

Just doesn’t seem to work…and I AM doing it Verbatim as instructed.
    Thanks for the help.

I just did this on an MP830, but don’t have a CD tray to test with yet, though the plastic removed easily and the service mode functions seemed to work fine. Afterwards I had to change the paper size from A4 to 8.5″x11″. The users of that machine complained of errors trying to send faxes, so I changed it back to the US. You just follow the exact same steps for setting to EUR, except for step “i”.

Press Stop/Reset 4 times for EUR, 3 times for US, 2 times for JPN, 1 time for KOR.

I also found it was faster to use step “g” in place of step “j” as “g” just prints out some plain text and “j” wants to print a bunch of color boxes. The text line at the top for me in US mode for step “g” is:
    MP830 US V1.07 IF(USB2=1) D=009.2 ST=2006/10/06-15:53

It appears so list Model, Region, Firmware Version, Connection Type, Unknown, Build Date.

    Atamido:

The reason step “j” is used is because their was a tray rejection problem when printing the simple rom page instead of the fancy one.

So step “j” is crucial to getting the cd print feature to work.

I have purchased a 6600d in November (we are on to our 4th model) first one had a paper grabing problem, the second had a screen that you could only see half the information the third would produce stripes on the printable CD and the fourth has a lesser stripes (but still clearly visable) on the CD. Are there any tricks, beyond following the instructions that can produce a better print on a CD. Is there anyone out there who has a 6600d that works? or have I had all of the lemons and Friday afternoon models made by canon?

    Chris vedra:

Wow four bad printers, you must have gotten all the lemons. The 6600d was replaced by the 6700D quite awhile back. I’m not sure why though because the models are very similiar in specs, maybe there was a problem in production and they wanted to purge that model as soon as possible.

I also own a 6600D that I bought on clearance from staples for $24. They were replacing it with the 6700D which was selling for $179. I haven’t had any problems that you have had and I have’t heard to much bad feedback but it’s always possible that there was a bad batch.

The stripes could also be coming from the type of cd printable that you use, maybe try a different brand of printable.

I am going to buy an MP830 and had planned on changing it to the Euro setting to print CD/DVDs. However, Atamido (#9) said there were problems faxing in Euro mode. Can anyone who has the MP830 in Euro mode please let me know how the faxing feature is changed and if there is any way to still send out faxes, as this is an important feature to me. Thank you

This worked for me on the MP830. Note that this will change your default paper size for e.g. copying to A4.

One glitch: In MS Publisher 2007 there seem to be several places where you need to specify CD printing. First, go to File | Page Setup and change the page size to 5.12 inches (13cm) wide, 9.06 inches (23 cm) high. Then from the Print dialog, click Properties and set the media type to Printable disc. This will automatically set the Paper source to disc tray. OK from the Properties dialog.
Back in the Print dialog, select Paper - Size CD-R Tray D. The first time I did this, “disc tray” did NOT appear as a choice in the Paper - Source dropdown; I left it at “paper feed switch” and the printer and driver both complained that the inner door was open. Well of course it is… setting it to “Paper allocation” worked. Then the second time I tried it, the Source was already set to “disc tray”, and no others were available! Publisher seems not able to cope well with the printer changing the list of possible sources.

“no cd-tray or cd printable disc is inserted. do so and click ok”

I am trying to get an iP6700D to work for CD-R printing on a Machintosh G4.

I have handled the plastic strip removal, switched my region to EUR confirmed by a second printout, prepared an image that fits perfectly in CD-LabelPrint, and I am following the procedures for Macintosh in Canon’s CD-R Print Guide. After I put the settings shown in Canon’s guide into the Page Setup dialog and invoke the CD-LabelPrint’s PRINT command, and OK their dialog, I get a message telling me the settings are wrong.

Does it matter that their manual refers to choosing CD-R Tray B, but my dialog only offers CD-R Tray C, which is the same letter shown on the tray I am using. If that’s all good, what am I doing wrong?

Has anyone tried it recently with an MP830? I’m not sure if anything has changed, but step G simply power cycles the printer after hitting the power button instead of printing out the ROM info. The system is in Service mode, as I get an SP TEST MODE message on the LCD screen, with Idle listed as the state. However, pressing the stop/reset button twice, then hitting the power button simply does a power cycle (taking it out of service mode). Anyone had any luck with this an an MP830?

You should not be switching off the power bar before starting the steps. Out of the box the process should be like this:

    1. The printer is plugged in for the first time.
    2. Push the Power Button on the printer, set it up, driver install, etc, and print out a couple of sheets of anything to make sure it is working properly.
    3. Push the Power Button on the printer to turn it off and then begin the steps.

Help! I just bought an MP970, but i got stuck after step 2g above. I can get to Service Mode, I have a blue light blinking for a while. then the blue light goes steady, and when I try to get to print a ROM page, I get several minutes of noises and blinking. After a while, a yellow light goes blinking 6 times, then pause, then again six times and so on. Nothing gets printed, either from the bottom tray or from the back tray. If I ignore this and continue, I get a few more noises after step h, then my screen goes off, and I am back to power off state.

I am so excited–an MP830 is arriving today. It’s my Christmas present to my husband, who has wanted a scanner with a document feeder for awhile. I wanted to replace one of our printers, though, instead of adding another peripheral to our collection, so with these steps we’ll replace the CD printer we’ve got! If we need to keep switching modes to do it so that we can use the fax features, so be it. I was wondering, though, if anyone has tried using the MP830 in the Taiwan settings instead of Europe? I downloaded the MP830 service manual from nodevice.com, and it says that CD/DVD printing is supported in Taiwan, and you get to those settings by pressing Stop/Reset 8 times instead of 4 in step 2i of this guide. And checking the Telecommunications Reference at nemesis.lonestar.org, it seems that the U.S. and Taiwan share the same dial tone and busy signal, and that their respective ringback signals are at least similar. Is there anything else so different between usage in the U.S. and Taiwan that this wouldn’t work?

    @Carolyn:
The phone and Fax features still work in Euro mode except for the Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection which is an American only feature that I know of, don’t know if Taiwan has the service.

Distinctive Ring is a service provided by a telephone company. It allows two phone numbers on the same phone line and is less expensive than having separate or dedicated lines. The different phone numbers can be identified by the ring pattern assigned to each, the first phone number has a single ring, the second has a double ring and the third has a triple ring.

I just purchased the MP970 and am really anxious to get it installed on my home network. Are these steps valid for network installation as well? Are there any modifications to these steps or extra steps that need to be followed to get the CD/DVD tray functionality to work? These steps are for enabling the cd print feature. They should not affect positively or negatively the networking feature built into the MP970. How to setup networking is probably covered pretty well in the manual that Canon provided.

Can the Five Steps be performed out-of-the-box before the printer (MP970) is setup and installed (USB or Network)? I’d like to do the Five Steps prior to installing the driver so that I don’t have to uninstall the driver and reinstall it. I would then go through the normal setup process for either USB or Network after the Five Steps have been done.

Michael, I have the MP970 installed on my home network and the five steps don’t affect it. What I did was install, did the five steps, uninstalled & reinstalled the driver, then installed it on my network. Everything works perfectly. I didn’t want to take any chances with doing the five steps first, and it doesn’t take a lot of time to reinstall. Better safe than sorry right?

I also get a error 5020 “release the scanner lock switch and turn power off and back on” even though my scanner switch is in unock mode

Doesn’t sound like your are making it into service mode, make sure the inner door is all the way up, make sure the top is closed, make sure both feeders have paper in them, make sure to turn off the power but do not unplug it. Start by pressing the stop/reset button first and then power button.

In response to my above posting concerning the problem I was having not being able to get the set-up drop down box to display my cd-tray choice, I got it working. Well I should say my Son got it working, and he did nothing more than what I had tried about a dozen times. He simply removed the printer, and then re-installed it, and TA DA! Everything works like a charm. I don’t know why it was being stubborn with me, but it works, and works well. Thanks for all the info provided here it’s been most helpful.

    Try these:

    1. The scanner lock switch probably has a sensor which may not be working properly. Try wiggling the switch around and see if the error goes away. The sensors usually work fine but maybe the printer was damaged in shipping.

    2. The MP970 is a new model so I’ll assume you just bought it and hopefully at a local store, take it back and tell them it is defective. If they press for details tell them it routinely shuts itself off in the middle of printing. Don’t say anything about cd printing at all. The new one should work without a hitch.

Hello, I just wanted to let you know that I just got the brand new MX850 multifunction printer and tried this procedure on it. It worked perfectly!!! Although previous MX Series machines did not have CD Printing capability, this one definitely does. I hope this info will help others. Thanks for the great site and very simple instructions for enabling this great function.

I just want to confirm that it does work with the MX850. A couple of differences. First it takes tray F. Second is that the print out sheet will be different then the above pictures (I will try and get accurate pics in). Follow the directions closely. It is easy to miss some of the second part of the steps if you don’t read it all.

Repeat the steps again it sometimes doesn’t work the first time. Make sure to use the uninstaller for the canon driver and then reinstall it.

Also take a look at the Tray Rejection General Guide.

I have an MP830. Did the 5 steps, all seemed fine. Then after printing a few CD’s the tray is no longer is completely inserted bty the printer, only about 1/4 0f it makes it to the print heads. The printer prints the top part of the cd on the bottom and then releasses the cd tray. There are no error lights blinking, it acts as if it has finished normally. My son did put a blank lable on a CD and then print on it, are there some contacts that I need to clean. I have cleaned the ones on tghe CD Tray itself to noavail. Thanks for any and all help!

Is it a mechanical problem do you see the tray not getting pulled into the printer?

You can push the tray further in then how the arrows line up if the wheels aren’t grabbing it.

You may want to also try proper inkjet printable media. Sticky labels on standard media might be to thick.

Yes, it physically is not pulling the tray all the way in. I have tried to ise a little force but I am afraind I might harm the machine. I triedd pushing the tray as far ass it will go , past arrows, and then tried to push a little more. From the outside view the tray goes in agout 2/3’s of th eway. It never fully is “consumed” by the printer. It seems to move a bit back and forth a little and then it pushes it out with like I asy maybe a 1/4 of the top of the cd on the bottom of the cd and the rest of the ink is on the tray. Thanks again!

    Hello,
Thanks again for your help in setting up my printer tray. It works great! However I have had a problem from the beginning with my fax and it just occurred to me that it might be connected to the changes that I made when setting up the dvd printer tray. If you can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Here’s the problem… at the very beginning of the fax setup instructions it says to press the fax button, then press the Menu botton and the fax menu screen will be displayed. When I press the fax button it prints the last fax that was sent to me. Then I get the following error “FAX output error - Check the page size and press OK”. I’ve searched through the Quick Start Guide and online to figure out how to check the page size and can’t find anything. If I just press OK, it prints the same fax again. I’ve tried it numerous ways and it just keeps printing the same fax (which I’ve now printed dozens of times). If I press the Fax button or the Menu button with the error message on the display, nothing happens. The only way that I can make anything happen is to turn the machine off, but then the same thing happens that I described above. Do you think the problem could be wtih changing the settings from USA to EUR? I’m concerned that if I contact Canon they won’t be able to help because they won’t know that I changed the settings and if I tell them, the warranty will be null and void. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks.

    @Becky:

The problem sounds like the default paper size is wrong after it was change to euro mode. They use A4 and we use Letter. You will need to set the default paper size back to Letter in the menu. It’s in the manual.

    Hi,

I have gone thru the 5 Easy Steps twice and my CDR will not change from 000000 to -00200. The 2nd printout each time says that I’m in “EUR” mode M=1.08. I’ve been looking at the instructions on the Tray Rejection General Guide and I wonder if I need to do the EPROM reset?

When I try to print a DVD I get the “Inner Door is Open” message. Printer is MP500.

    @brysomme mannen:

You can do an eprom reset which has been known to fix tray rejection which is why it is listed in the General Guide.

The -00200 is cdr position and NOT an indication that the feature is enable so STOP looking for it to change.

Just so I’m fully clear: If after doing the 5 Steps and uninstalling & reinstalling the driver my CDR reads “000000, 000000″, this is OK? I ask because your Tray Rejection Guide says: “CDRS=(000) should be something other then zero’s, if it’s zero’s then you should repeat the five steps. ”

Also, when should I insert the “D” tray? Will the printer prompt me for it?

    CDRS=(000) and CDRP=(000000, 000000) are different things.

The tray should be inserted when you are told by the print driver, click print and wait a couple of minutes for the printer to be prepared, it will tell you to lower the inner door and slide the tray in.

Thanks, I was able to get it work. Let me list my steps so maybe it can help someone else.

Redid the 5 steps but tried something a little different.

    - After selecting region (press stop/reset 5 times then power) I pressed Stop/Reset 5 times instead of 4 and got Australia as the region instead of Euro.

-Did the print ROM command and this time the print out looked a bit different (looked more like the one shown on this page with the color bars, up until now i was only able to print the ROM page that was about 20 lines of code but. Key part of this new rom page was there is a heading that says CDR SENSOR= OK..I’d upload a scan of this if someone can tell me where to send an image file.

    - Did not re-install Canon driver

-Went to CD-Labelprint program and was able to finally print a cd!

    Thanks Mate,

No real differences between Euro and Australia they both work. The problem sounds like it just didn’t get enabled the first time through which has happened before.

Humm, that is great, it worked beautifully on my MP830. BUT… now I lost the DRPD feature (the manual says it is for US and CANADA only). Is there any way to have BOTH CD print feature AND DRPD?

DRPD is a nice feature if you still use the FAX feature. I have moved on from faxes myself due to the cost and the fact people were moving more to email.

You could try Australia (5 times instead of 4 times at step i. ):

    Australia has 7 Distinctive Rings
For DISTINCTIVE RING pattern DR1 - Dial 1
For DISTINCTIVE RING pattern DR2 - Dial 2 (Smart Ring 2)
For DISTINCTIVE RING pattern DR3 - Dial 3
For DISTINCTIVE RING pattern DR4 - Dial 4 (Smart Ring 1)
For DISTINCTIVE RING pattern DR5 - Dial 5 (Smart Ring 3)
For DISTINCTIVE RING pattern DR6 - Dial 6 (Multiple Number)
For DISTINCTIVE RING pattern DR7 - Dial 7 (FaxStream Duet)

Sadly I don’t know if the phone protocol is the same as the US and Canada though and I’ve never tried this so if you do report back if it works.

I have tried to set the country to AUS and the fax is working fine (I have been able to receive fax succesfully in manual mode), so the phone protocol seems compatible. However, I still do not see DRPD options in the Fax Receiving Mode menu. In which menu would I find the 7 mode you listed?

Thanks a lot again for your help. I will report if that works as soon as I can find out where the option is for DRPD.

Major issue with my MP530… After using for a few days I followed your 5 steps and printed out
full page. Continued and was unable to go any further so I powered off and restarted 5 steps. Got
second full sheet to print and then was able to get short print sheet that showed “MP530 EUR”
at top. Then I noticed the 1st 2 sheets had “MP530 AUS” at top (I’m in US). After the short
print sheet I pressed the power button twice to save. I then uninstalled & reinstalled driver
and when it said to power on printer it wouldn’t power on. Have checked all connections but
still no power. How do I fix?

Sounds like a more serious problem then, you said it was new so I would return it to the store you bought it from.

Update on my power issue - Canon received a lot of complaints about power issue so
they sent some printers to Japan. Turns out problem is with connection of power

Several months ago I successfully converted my MP530 US to a MP530 EUR and have been able to use a type D CD-tray. Recently I noticed a new firmware upgrade for the printer available at the Canon site (note - this is an actual update to the printer itself, not the drivers on the computer). I’d like to update my printer’s firmware to see if it addresses some issues unrelated to CD printing, but I’m concerned that it might disable or otherwise be incompatible with the EUR conversion. Any insight?

It’s very unlikely that the upgraded firmware will disable the CD printing. The new firmware seems to fix fax bugs. Make sure you have the proper model that actually needs upgrading.

Hey all, thanks for the great info.
Here’s something to chew on: I bought the Canon PIXMA MP530 and the mod worked great except that when I go to print on the DVDs with Nero CoverDesigner, there is no paper stock choice for the MP530. I only have choices for IP3000, I865, and I905. None of these use the same cd tray, D, that the MP530 uses though the IP3000 is pretty close.

So, the first DVD I printed had half the label printed above the DVD, on the plastic. Several more attempts and they all went over the top onto the plastic. Used a different stock, the IP3000 I think, and got pretty close but not spot on.

The Canon software, CD-LabelPrint works but isn’t lined up quite right. I’d prefer to use the Nero because it seems a bit more useful than the canon stuff. I’ve updated Nero, the driver, and everything else I could think of but can’t seem to find the solution.

Is there a paper stock somewhere for the MP530 or am I just missing the boat on something simple?
Thanks for your time. Keep up the good work, we all appreciate it.

Yahoo is your email service so the problem appears to be at your end. Are you using Microsoft Outlook or the web interface?

Try the web interface and it should go through.

Some ISP’s force you to use their SMTP server to send out email. Is your ISP Verizon?

I have a Canon MX850. All the steps mentioned above seem to work except when I try to print onto the disk, the CD/DVD tray ejects and I get the error message on my LCD screen, “There is no CD-R tray”. I’m using printable CD-R disks. Is there a particular kind of disk I should be using in order for this to work? This is extremely frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was trying to help you, you had a more difficult one, it can happen like that. Sometimes it works on the first try and other times it can take 10 or 15 times to go through. The Euro and Oz modes both work and it’s not really a solution, it just happened to final work.

Also the CDR SENSOR=OK is just a basic check of the sensor and does not indicate that the proper changes have been made.

I just bought a Canon Pixma MX850. This conversion process worked flawlessly. Regarding the plastic to remove, I was able to do that with just my fingernail. There are only 3 plastic tabs/clips which hold that plastic on. The steps for entering the service mode and changing from USA to EUR worked great and on the first try.

The only thing I was a little concerned about is that the printer driver installation program asks where you live. I wasn’t sure if my answer might impact whether CD printing would be enabled/disabled. Also, after resetting the printer to EUR mode, then it prompted me again to specify what language I wanted for the on-screen menus, and also asked me to pick which European country I am in. I don’t know what impact my choice would have on printer functionality or operational defaults, so I selected “Others” (though I considered selecting “UK”).

    @ QuadCore

I don’t believe the MX850 ever shows a CDR SENSOR=OK message when the machine is in USA mode. It would be irrelevant, after all. I do know that when I printed the first ROM page (step 2. g.) I did not see any mention of the CDR sensor. But I did see mention of it on the ROM page after changing to EUR mode.

But, you are the expert… I can only offer my insight from the field with a fairly recently built MX850.

BTW, I noticed that the Canon-Europe web site has a firmware update for the MX850… version 1.03 as I recall. I’m not sure if I’m looking at the right part of the ROM print page, but I think my unit is running firmware 1.00. Anyone know if the firmware 1.03 update causes any issues (like, specifically, with our favorite hack to enable CDR printing)? Anyone know what issues firmware 1.03 resolves?

I have an MP970. Followed these instructions - took out the plastic, entered service mode. I had trouble the first time I did it because I was getting the EEPROM printout the first time through instead of the simple service mode print (because step 2g indicates pushing stop/clear twice - when, in fact, your “EPROM vs. ROM printout page” indicates it should be once. Is that a typo in these instructions?) — somehow I wound up setting the thing in Korean, so I did an EPROM reset.

So now when I print out either the EEPROM or the simple service mode print, both of them say the printer is set EUR — whoo-hoo. I’ve got CD-Tray F showing up in my list of paper. Also a bonus. So it LOOKS like everything should be okay.

However, when I send something to print, the printer keeps printing from the rear tray, NOT the CD tray. I have tried both the Photoshop template and Acoustica Label Maker. I definitely have all settings to CD Tray F - I even tried Paper Allocation instead of Paper Feed Switch, as someone suggested. If I try putting the tray in right away instead of waiting for the computer to prompt me, I get an error that the inner door is open and it wants me to close it so I can print from the rear tray. I tried first manually changing the registry key and, when that didn’t help matters, I completely uninstalled and reinstalled the software. STILL rear tray.

What’s going on, and how do I fix this?!

Katie: These two screenshots show how the printer preferences should be set when trying to print to the tray.

    1.

    2.

PS: Sorry about the confusion on the two printouts, I don’t bother using either since it waste paper but they are useful for comparison purposes. The service mode printout shows very little so I think I typed 2 times instead of one just so people would end up with both sheets and the end one would be the colorful one showing EURO mode.

    Muse:

You had problems with your model but that does happen and it has nothing to do with EUR or AUS settings. It also doesnâ??t have anything to do with the CDR SENSOR=OK because that is just a basic check of that sensor when printing out a service mode printout. The CDRS=0000 is an offset number which is usually something other then zeroâ??s on most models but once in awhile itâ??s zero.

I’ve seen this a lot over the years where the model finally works and people think that is the solution then and everyone should do the same but it’s just buggy firmware.

I bought a new MX850 about a week ago and I cannot get past the tray rejection issue. The only thing I did to the printer out of the box was to upgrade the firmware to 1.030. I’ve reset the EPROM twice (once in EUR mode, once in AUS mode). CDRS is = 000, but nothing I’ve done in the Service menu has ever caused that to change. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the driver from the Add/Remove programs menu at least 3 times (including after each EPROM reset). Everything else works fine, using USB connection under XP. Scanning, printing, etc. I’m at a loss, I have no idea what to try next. Any ideas?

I’m not sure why you needed to upgrade the firmware. What issue did that address?

The steps sometimes need to be repeated several times. Also at step g. try pressing the stop/reset button once then Power, may give you different results.

Just purchased the MX850, had the same issue as MUSE, tried everything - 5 steps, reset EPROM, etc. Went so far as upgrading the Firmware from 1.00 shipping to 1.03 from the EU Canon site. Also downloaded the EU v1 MX driver (even though I am in the US.) Still had the No Printable CD detected/tray rejection error. Followed the 5 steps exactly for maybe the 10th time, and finally it started to print with the CD-F tray. The CDRS=(0000) is still there, the numbers didn’t change, but at the bottom of the page in red is now says CDR SENSOR=OK for what its worth. Lots of frustration, followed by a big grin when it finally worked. Thanks for all the help, suggestions, templates, guides, etc. Much appreciated.

It’s just a habit I got into a long time ago, I upgraded the firmware because it usually results in less problems down the line. Not sure if it has had any effect on the printer or not. I’ve done the steps (including the firmware reset) multiple times, I never seem to get anything different though.

I tried pressing the reset button once instead of twice at step G, the printer flashes the Alarm LED twice - and repeats this - but no test page prints.

Well, I’m not sure which of these things made the difference, but it’s fixed :)

I loaded paper in the rear tray and used the single button press. It confirmed I was in AUS mode and CDRS = 0000. I set it back to US with 3 clicks on the region menu, and saved. CDRS was now set to non-zero… so I set it back to EUR and this time, it finally showed CDRS = 1834. Presto, no more tray rejection. Thanks very much for the assistance and this awesome website.

Quadecore It is in service mode because it says it at the top of the screen and when the copy light quites blinking it says idle. I have done this with a MP 970 and it worked like a charm the 970 printed on cds the first time. I have also tried pushing stop 3 times and a few other things but whenever I hit power to set it BOOM it shuts off I think maybe Canon made some real changes to their firmware. this time. Its a wonderful printer I just wanted it to be a little better plus just the chance of modding something is a blast to me.

    Pretty please help me:
I’ve got a Canon PIXMA iP 6600D, on Printer Maintanance indicating “Tray C”, and I’m unable to start with the first step: “Remove the black plastic”
I’ve opened the Paper output tray, and then the Inner Cover (operating as the CD-Tray Feeder). I can however, not find any place on the Inner Cover being able to be clipped off - all extended parts of the black plastic seem to be securely mounted onto the inside of the rest of the printer’s body … please advise me?

Continuing to try the MP980 with no luck. Found an MP960 service manual online which details procedures for entering the Service Mode as well as follow-on settings once in Service Mode. These mirror the procedures found here. I also noted that when entering service mode and when pressing the STOP/RESET button, the POWER (blue - center) and ERROR (yellow/orange - right) lights will alternate with each press of STOP/RESET. It is interesting that these also indicate as advertised on the MP980 when using the procedure to enter the service mode (POWER-STOP RESET (SR), release SR, SR 2x, etc), however once in Service Mode the indicators do not change regardless of what keys are then pressed.

I’ve tried multiple button press combinations to include combinations with the power button, each time with the same result. Once the power button is pressed, upon release (even in combination with other buttons), the printer exits the Service Mode. Any other keypress does nothing. Additionally, the printer goes through an ink clean purge cycle upon entering the service mode, and upon exiting the service mode, which makes this trial and error procedure more costly!

Anyone have an idea how to get your hands on an MP980 service manual? My guess is Canon has added a lock procedure (certain keypress sequence) to the service menu that must be pressed upon entering the Service Mode before any additional commands may be entered.
