This is where everyone should begin:

  • Some newer models are showing up and they usually work the same as the older models *if* nothing has changed.
  • Please be aware that sometimes the steps don’t work the first time, repeating the steps usually fixes it.
  • If tray rejection continues please read the Tray Rejection General Guide and also Tray Rejection and Mac OSX.
  • The LCD screen is not used in the process except with the older MP700 series.
  • You will get no indication that the process has worked except for the printout, this is how to confirm success.
  • Canon CD trays are sold on eBay, search eBay for “Canon CD Tray”.
  • Make sure to have paper in both trays and that the paper selection is set to rear tray not the bottom bfore entering service mode.
  • If you get 6 blinks error and no print out it means the inner door is still down from steps one.
  • For an explanation of Service Mode vs. ROM print out please see “EEPROM & Service Mode Printout“.

Is there any info yet on direct cd/dvd printing hacks the new PIXMA iP6700D?

    Thanks,
    -=Derek

The 6700 is more then likely based on the 6600, so I would guess that using the 6600 instructions will work for it.

So I went ahead and bought a PIXMA iP6700D, and I was able to successfully use the instructions for the iP6600D to set the ROM to EUR and I removed the plastic block from the CD tray insert. Unfortunately, my attempts to create a homemade CD tray from types B and D templates listed on this site did not work. The printer keeps rejecting my tray.

Does anyone know exactly which CDR tray type the iP6700D takes?

    Thanks,
    -=Derek

The printer will actual list the tray letter in the printer properties. Take a look around in your properties and you will find it.

I am thinking of buying a MP780 but am amazed to find that I will have to muck around just to print cd’s etc. This is standard, isnt it. The tray doesnt come with the unit. I have to get it and do this stuff before I can print? I am in australia but found a great price on one in NY.

The Australian version includes the tray and the feature from what I have been told. The American version doesn’t. The tray will cost you $20 or more from ebay sellers, so you should add that to your cost.

The MP780 is the last MP model to allow the use of generic carts while the MP8xx line is a bit more advanced and better looking it does have the memory chip on the carts which means only using Canon carts or refilling the tanks with Hobbicolor refill ink which can be found on ebay.

I have the model iP6600. Your instructions for the model iP6600 indicate that a type D tray is the one to use. Most of the Ebay tray sellers however, have Type C as the one for the iP6600. And, your instructions for the iP5200 (using the type C tray) states that some people can use a Type B tray for the iP6600, but the Type C is the right one for the iP6600. I ordered a Type C tray off of Ebay. I just wanted point out the conflicting information.

Thanks I will fix that right away.

I purchased the Canon Pixma ip6700D and was able to get the CD insert from an e-bay vendor.
    I have a few questions:
    1. Must I reconfigure my machine to make it think it is a EURO machine?
    2. Do you still need a unique print driver for printing CD/DVD?
So the one provided with the US will not work for CD/DVD? Is your list a
complete list of dirvers are are there other sources?
    3. Once I set the machine for EURO disk printing, are there limitations or
problems I will encounter as a US XP Windows user?
    4. If the machine must be made to think it is a EURO machine, how can I put
it back to US machine, or is this a one way street?
    5. What type of layout software do you use to create the image and print
    the CD/DVD?

    1. Yes you must change the destination of the printer to Euro mode.

    2. The USA driver works fine it’s on the cd that came with the printer.

    3. No Limitations or problems, it works great as tested by 1000’s of other users.

Couldn’t be easier than on the MP960. I found that using a dental pick I could easily remove the plastic plate from the appropriate tray (that second little tray hanging in the output section). The first Rom page looked nothing like the one pictured but the post conversion one looked like the one in the picture. The first one was all black text. Anyway, I have yet to print my first CD/DVD but so far so good. Thanks.

Yes the i9900 could be converted to the i9950 but it isn’t worth the money and the newer pixma are much better at it. The i9900 require an extra piece which is impossible to find anywhere.

I would recommend buying the IP4300 and doing the easy convert to it. It will save you time, money and aggravation. I’ve seen the 4300 as low as $50 after rebate.

I just purchased a new Canon ip6600d Pixma printer to replace an older one that I had. I have tried dozens of times to get the printer to reset in order to use the cd tray, but to no avail. One time it will print the information page, other times, not, and even then, it will only print one time and not the second time. I bought an MP600 and a tray off ebay. I did the 5 steps and kept having my CD tray rejected. But this site has some excellent troubleshooting steps for tray rejections. I followed those and now it works. I clicked on the “General Tray Rejections” as well as the “MP600″ links & was able to get it working. Thanks for the good info. It took a couple of hours to figure it all out, but now it works!

From what I understand, it was a legal issue between Epson and Canon. Apparently Epson has some US patent that Canon was infringing on for printing direct to CDs. That’s why Epson is the only manufacturer in the US allowed to the print direct to CD.

I press the Resume button, then the Power button. The blue light flashes, but there is no print-out. The blue light flashing would indicate an error like no paper in the feeder or the wrong feeder selected or the inner door being down when you where in service mode.

Using XP pro. There is paper in the feeder, and the rear feeder is selected. The inner door is up when I’m trying to get into the service mode. Here’s the sequence:

First, I unplug and reconnect printer power cord. I hold down RESUME and then hold down power.. I release RESUME and continue to hold down POWER. I double click RESUME and then release POWER. The Green light is solid, and the printer starts to turn on. I try to check to see if I’m in service mode by clicking RESUME and then POWER. All sounds stop, the blue light is solid. There is no print-out. Inner door is closed, paper tray is down and in rear-feed mode.

Maybe it’s a simple problem like your not waiting long enough after entering service mode. You said that the printer makes noise when you first enter it might not be ready for the next command.

Also you may want to try different software the cd labeprint software has been known to be buggy.

You didn’t mention whether the printer properties drop down menu has the cd-r tray x listed in page size?

You mentioned that a blue light flashes, is that still happening? That would indicate some kind of error, I believe that printer has two feed methods, one from the back and from the front, this has been a common problem.

    These are the steps:

    1. Unplug the printer and then plug it back in. (Required to bypass Automatic Power-on function which keeps the printer on even if the power switch is off.)
    2. Press and hold the Resume button and then hold the Power. (The Power LED lights in green to indicate that a function is selectable.)
    3. Release the Resume button but keep holding the Power button.
    4. Press the Resume button twice then release the power button. (Each time the Resume/Cancel button is pressed, the Alarm and Power LEDs light alternately, Alarm in orange and Power in green, starting with Alarm LED.)
    5. Press the resume 4 times and then Power. Waste ink counter reset is executed.
    6. Press power once or twice to exit the service menu.

    1. Repeat the 5 steps to enable the feature…sometimes it doesn’t work the first time.
    2. Uninstall the driver using the uninstaller.exe and then reinstall it.
    3. Make sure you wait until the Canon software tells you to lower the inner door and slide the tray in.

Everything worked great on my MP970 with iMac G5. I suggest you disconnect the printer from the computer (USB or Firewire) and put paper in each tray (front and upper back). Then go thru the 5 steps very carefully.

After you complete that process, reconnect your printer to your computer and re-install your printer software from the disk that came with your printer. When using a Mac you do not have to uninstall the software. That is a PC necessity which is not necessary for the Mac.

Simply re-install and that process “overwrites” the existing driver, etc. Once you do that then you are on your way to some wonderful disk printing. Incidentally, I use Disc Cover program to create my disk covers, and I think it’s great. This software comes with Printfolio, a BeLight software package, or may be purchased separately. My thanks to everyone who published the 5 steps for us to use.

THANKS so much for the Step by Step Guide….

Here in Canada we can just call up to CANON parts at 1-888-832-4719 and ask them to send the CD Tray ‘ F ‘ part # QL2-1449-000 ..cost is $ 8.40 each… directly to us. Yes they take Visa and MasterCard and they send Via Canada Post. They do not ask you for your Serial Number . You just ask to purchase some parts….they will even give you the part Numbers if you like…i just said i would like the CD tray ‘ F ‘ for my printer…if they do ask which printer just say IP4500 ..this model also takes the Tray F.

Once again thanks so much for the information.

I bought the MX850 when it came out a couple of months ago. I’ve tried repeatedly on two desktops (both Vista) and two laptops (both XP Pro) via USB and Ethernet and cannot get the thing to print to CD/DVD. I’ve done the 5 Steps multiple times, EPROM reset, tray rejection guide, firmware update, used US and EUR drivers, tried the Canon Label Print, Nero 8 and 9 Cover Designer and still nothing.

I’ve seen others have gotten the MX850 to work via USB and Ethernet. What the hell am I doing wrong? I always get the tray rejection. I’ve set the printer to both EUR and AUS and nothing. Can anyone help? I’m about to go buy an Epson Artisan 800.

    Thanks.

Sadly at this time the CD print feature is not available for the newer models. Hopefully we will get some new information about the IP4600 and MP980.

A few questions. First, it seems like the Canon MX 850 is a candidate for the addition of a cd tray, but when I click “instructions” next to the listing of the MX850 it takes me to a page that lists other Canon printers but not the MX 850. So will adding a cd tray really work on an MX850? And will it work on a computer running on Mac OS 10.5? And will it print directly to printable disks?
    Thanks.

Be sure to read the Mac OS X category and read comments by other users to save your self some time if you are going to use canon cd label print.

First I would like to THANK everyone associated with this site. Without your help we would not have been able to convert our new Canon MP610 to print on CD/DVD’s. It is a great service that you provide the public. Too bad Canon can’t sell their printers in the U.S. with the CD/DVD print feature enabled, but that’s the way the legal system works.

As mentioned we recently purchased a new Canon MP610 for only 54.00. It’s a steal and a incredible bargain. We use a 900.00 color laser printer for everything else, but for printing on CD/DVD’s we use the Canon along with Taiyo Yuden “WaterShield” media and together they work incredibly great. Our only question is what settings should we be using to print all the way down to the small disc centers hole? The Canon software (CD LabelPrint) limits the size to only 33mm, but shouldn’t this be closer to 16-20mm?

Is it possible to print all the way to the outer edges with CD Label Print. So far all my prints have a unprinted ring around the outer edge. I tried to bring the image to the outer edge and beyond on some prints and I still get it. Though it looks nice on certain disks. Will that template that you put the link up to solve this?

CD Label Print is limited to 118mm on the outer edge. You need to use Nero Cover Designer, Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or a few other software apps to overcome this limitation.

I have an mx850 that I am trying to update via “the 5 step procedure”
I enter service mode no problem but when I get there and try to get it to let me choose a destination nothing happens.
I know others state they have gotten it to work with the mx850.
When I enter service mode it states that it is idle, every time I push the stop/reset button the copy and alarm lights alternate.
Should I see something on the screen for choosing the destination?
I also tried hitting stop/reset 4 times after 2h and when I print out the report NOTHING shows up next to the MX850 model number on the 1st line.

The LCD screen is not used in the process.

Every push of stop/reset should alternate the lights.

Just follow the instructions and print out the sheet to show EURO instead of USA. The USA or EURO may not be next to the model number. The colored sheet with say SET=USA and near the bottom there should be a barcode with MX850USA. This is what will change when you do the steps.

The MP980 is not listed above, but the the MP970 and MP960 are. I’ve confirmed the European MP980 does include CD printing standard. Have you successfully added the CD print feature to an MP980, and if so, could you confirm that purchasing TRAY F and following the MP970 instructions are the correct approach?

Has anyone ever tried using a clear spray coating over the inks on the printed side of the CD to protect the inks? I’ve noticed that if the dried inks on the CD get wet, they will easily wash off the CD. I’m currently making demo CD’s for my band, which will be passed out in bars, and could be subject to things like spilled drinks, etc. I’d like to try and protect the printed graphics on the CD, and was thinking that something like a clear acrylic spray coating (like from an auto suppy store) might help (as long as it’s not a water-based coating, of course). Anyone have any experience protecting the graphics on their printed CD’s???

Canon MP830 - Set the Printer to Eur, Made a tray, created a new printer (mac), when I try to print it tells me that the center tray is open and I need to close it to print - then proceeds to print on regular paper. I have chosen the D tray in the page setup and specified the D tray from the software DiscLabel. Any thoughts?

Some people use spray on coating, it can be a messy job though and smells pretty bad. Best to do it outside or in a ventilated garage.

Another solution would be to use Taiyo Yuden Watershield DVD’s or Verbatim Hardcoat DVD’s. They print great and are smudge proof.

[If you bought an American model then the feature is disabled. If it’s a European model then it should have it.]

Are you saying that the American MP980 cannot be adapted to work by using Tray G as listed on EBay at all. The feature cannot be enabled. Or, that it is not enabled on the american mdel by default, but it can be upgraded like most of the other Canon printers? I am wanting to buy one, but I want to print on DVD’s. If it is unable to upgraed to work, then I need to look for another model.

    Thanks in advance

    Response To: Clay

The IP4600 and MP980 are both set to disable the feature. It’s very very doubtful that any method of enabling the feature with be revealed.

You have two options at this time:

    1. Buy a European model and have it shipped here, you will need also to buy a US power supply.

    2. Buy an older known model that is listed like the MP610 or MP970.

Thanks for the reply. I have looked at buying the European model on eBay but given the current exchange rate, its not really worth @ 450.00 US. I’m now looking at the MX 850. That model is in the list as using Tray F and there appear to be instructions here for that model. I realize that it is an older printer, but you can still buy them new, and other than wireless, they seem to have all the good features.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully the conversion will go well. I’ll report back when I finally get it completed. I Hope!
